There is no doubt that loft ladders are extremely useful things to have around. If you have any intention of using your loft on a regular basis you need to know that you can get access to it as easily as possible. Provided your loft ladder is of good quality and it is properly affixed in position, there is no reason why you cannot use it on a daily basis.
But of course you also need to think about who else will be able to use it. For example, do you have young children in your household who would be fascinated by the fact that the ladder is there? If you do it pays to be careful whenever you intend to pull down the ladder to go up into the attic.
The reason for this is obvious. If you are alone with the kids and you want to climb up into the loft, you won’t be able to watch them. And the most likely thing for them to do is to want to follow you up there – which obviously isn’t a good idea at all.
The solution to this is easy. Always leave your tasks until someone else is around to watch the children. If they know the loft ladder is down they will automatically be attracted to it, and if they have just a few seconds to spare they will start climbing before you even realise they are doing it.
It is always worthwhile teaching your children why ladders can be dangerous. But if they are still of a very young age they will not be able to grasp the importance of this. So the main thing to do is to keep the children out of the way while you are up in the loft and doing whatever you need to do there. In fact if you can keep the ladder completely out of sight so they don’t even realise it is there, so much the better.
Of course most people will be more than careful when it comes to children of a young age. But it is worthwhile making sure older children are aware of the dangers as well. If a child is old enough you can even teach them how to climb a ladder safely under your supervision. This can teach them good habits that will stay with them for life.
